Liftbrief / Expert Q&A

3. What would make you recommend premium commercial travel instead of private aviation?

Put this to: Jeff Agur and a participating corporate CFO or travel director.

Why it matters: require the expert to make the case against private travel as well as for it. NATA’s consumer guide itself recognises that scheduled airlines can make sense between distant major cities, while identifying multi-stop schedules and destinations poorly matched to airline service as relevant charter considerations. This is a decision principle, not a current fare comparison. (nata.aero)

Question: “What evidence would convince you that private aviation is unnecessary for this mission, even if the travellers prefer it?”

A good answer should cover:

  1. Dated commercial itineraries that genuinely meet the meeting requirements—not deliberately inconvenient alternatives.
  2. Door-to-door timings, including ground transport, airport buffers, time zones and overnight stays.
  3. Cash expenditure separately from any assumed value of executive time.
  4. The business consequence of missing the meeting, supported by the budget owner rather than invented by the supplier.
  5. Alternative designs: a different meeting time, fewer travellers, a commercial/private combination or remote attendance.

Follow-up: “Which claimed savings are actual avoided payments, and which are valuations of convenience or productivity?”

Proposed approval output: a one-page memo showing feasible alternatives, incremental private-flight expenditure, the reason for the exception and who authorised it. Record non-financial preferences honestly rather than converting them into unsupported cash savings.
