Liftbrief / Comparisons

Is there a reliable annual-hours break-even point?

Not from the public evidence reviewed here. Product structures provide starting points, but a defensible crossover requires comparable missions, current offers and the buyer’s actual contract assumptions. Flexjet’s published cost components and NetJets’ differentiated access terms illustrate why hours alone are insufficient. (flexjet.com)

How should finance model the alternatives?

Use two separate views. The following is an original analytical framework, not accounting or tax advice.

1. Cash funding view

Record the dates and amounts of deposits, share purchases, recurring payments, flight charges and contractual refunds. Show the highest projected cash commitment and the expected unspent programme balance separately.

2. Economic-use view

Compare the cost of the missions actually delivered over a consistent horizon. For ownership, include purchase price less assumed net exit proceeds, recurring operating charges and an explicitly chosen financing or capital-cost treatment. Do not count both the entire acquisition price and depreciation as separate economic costs.

For prepaid access, separate consumed service from remaining entitlement. Do not automatically call an unused refundable balance a loss—or assume an unused balance is equivalent to cash.

Which stress tests reveal poor fit?

ScenarioWhat to changeWhat to report
Base caseReconstruct expected trips by date, route and passenger requirementTotal funding, delivered missions and remaining entitlement
Lower utilisationRemove trips management considers genuinely uncertainUnused hours or funds, recurring costs and exit options
Peak-date concentrationMove relevant trips onto the actual peak calendarEligibility, notice requirements, extra charges and substitute transport
Larger travelling partyIncrease passengers and baggage on selected missionsUpgrade/interchange charges or separate charter requirements
Short-notice changesApply the office’s real cancellation and rescheduling patternFees, lost entitlement and operational alternatives

Illustrative sensitivity—not a programme quotation: if an assumed non-refundable USD 250,000 purchase expires with 20% unused, USD 50,000 of purchased value is unconsumed. If the actual agreement allows refund, carry-forward or repricing, the treatment changes. The exercise is to read the contract, not to attach the same loss assumption to every card.

For a buyer searching “best jet card for 25 hours a year”, begin with the trip list. Twenty-five expected hours do not tell you how many peak dates, short legs, aircraft upgrades or cancellations the agreement must accommodate.
