4. What taxes apply to US private jet charter in 2026?

For taxable transportation of persons by air, the federal percentage tax is 7.5%; the 2026 domestic-segment tax is USD 5.30 per passenger per taxable segment. IRS Publication 510 also lists a 2026 international air-travel-facilities tax of USD 23.40 per person for applicable flights beginning or ending in the United States, with separate Alaska and Hawaii treatment. (irs.gov)

The taxable amount is not necessarily limited to occupied flight time: the IRS includes items such as waiting time and deadhead aircraft movement in amounts paid for transportation. Exemptions and special rules mean that buyers should not apply one blanket calculation to every charter, international itinerary, fractional arrangement or aircraft-management payment. (irs.gov)

Simplified illustration only: assume the supplier confirms USD 30,000 of taxable transportation, six passengers and two taxable domestic segments, with no exemption or other charge:

  • Percentage tax: USD 30,000 × 7.5% = USD 2,250.
  • Segment tax: 6 × 2 × USD 5.30 = USD 63.60.
  • Illustrated total: USD 32,313.60.

Ask the invoicing party to identify the taxable base, passenger and segment assumptions, applicable exceptions, and whether tax is already included. Have an aviation tax adviser review unusual structures rather than relying on a generic charter calculator.
