Liftbrief / Direct questions

8. Can a midsize private jet fly New York to Los Angeles non-stop?

Some aircraft may suit the mission, but the category label does not guarantee a non-stop flight. Textron publishes a maximum range of 2,700 nautical miles for the Citation Latitude, while its product comparison lists 3,500 nautical miles for the Citation Longitude—illustrating why model-specific assessment matters. Ask the operating carrier to assess both directions using the intended passenger and baggage load. Request an explanation of the assumptions behind its answer, including forecast winds, routing, fuel reserves and airport conditions.

The procurement question should be:

For this aircraft, these passengers and bags, and this travel window, what is your planning expectation for a non-stop flight, and what would cause a fuel stop?

Then ask who bears additional charges if a stop becomes necessary and how the arrival estimate changes.

Do not demand an unconditional operational guarantee. Instead, compare:

  • An aircraft assessed as suitable for the non-stop requirement.
  • A lower-priced option with an explicitly acceptable stop.
  • The consequences if the arrival deadline is missed.

For a hard deadline, a cheaper aircraft is not a like-for-like substitute if its proposed mission includes materially different stopping or timing assumptions.
